Insight is a dedicated legal recruitment consultancy operating across the UK. We work with law firms of every size — from Magic Circle institutions to highly regarded boutiques — bringing the same rigour, discretion, and market knowledge to every instruction we accept.
We recruit across the full spectrum of UK private practice — from Magic Circle to boutique — connecting exceptional legal professionals with the right firms at every level of seniority, across every practice area.
From Magic Circle to boutique, we recruit across all UK law firm tiers. Partner hires, lateral moves, NQ appointments, and support staff — handled with the discretion every instruction deserves.
Your career deserves more than a transactional recruiter. We take time to understand your goals, your values, and what the right next move genuinely looks like — not just what is available right now.
Whether you are a firm instructing on a sensitive Partner search or a senior lawyer exploring options privately, discretion is at the centre of everything we do. We manage every assignment with the care it deserves.
Start a confidential conversation"We engaged Insight for a sensitive and highly confidential Partner-level lateral search in our Corporate practice. Their understanding of the market was exceptional — they presented a shortlist of candidates we simply could not have reached through any other route. The process was managed with complete professionalism and the placement has been outstanding. Insight are now our first call for any significant hire."
"Insight genuinely took the time to understand our firm's culture and what we needed beyond the CV. They introduced us to a Senior Associate who has since become central to our Disputes team. Refreshingly honest throughout — they told us when a candidate wasn't right rather than just filling the brief."
"Managing lateral hiring across multiple practice groups is complex. Insight made it significantly easier. They hold genuine relationships at every level of seniority and understand the nuances of each practice area. Their market intelligence alone is worth the engagement."
"I was not actively looking to move, but Insight approached me about an opportunity that was clearly well-researched and relevant. They presented it honestly, supported me throughout the process and negotiated an excellent package. A completely different experience to most recruiters."
"We needed to scale our Real Estate team quickly following a significant instruction win. Insight delivered four high-quality hires across different seniority levels within six weeks. The speed and quality was remarkable — and every candidate is still with us."
"As a newly qualified solicitor, navigating the market felt daunting. Insight gave me genuinely honest advice about my options, opened doors I didn't know existed, and supported me through every stage. I would recommend them to any lawyer at any point in their career."
"I had spoken to several recruiters before Insight got in touch. The difference was immediately clear — they had actually read my CV, understood my background in Real Estate Finance and had a specific, well-matched opportunity in mind. The whole process from first call to offer took three weeks. Exceptional."
"After twelve years at the same firm I was nervous about making a move. Insight were patient, never pushy, and helped me think through what I actually wanted — not just what was available. They found me a role I wouldn't have found myself and I couldn't be happier with where I've landed."
"Insight placed me as a Conveyancing Solicitor and the process was seamless from start to finish. They were honest about what firms were actually like to work for — not just what looked good on paper — and that made all the difference in finding somewhere that was genuinely the right fit."

From Magic Circle and Silver Circle firms to highly regarded national and boutique practices — Insight has the relationships, the market knowledge, and the discretion to serve every private practice instruction with distinction.
Private practice recruitment demands a consultant who understands not just the role, but the firm's culture, its partnership model, its clients, and its strategic direction. At Insight, we take the time to understand all of these before we begin any search.
We work on both retained and contingency assignments across all seniority levels — from Partner and Legal Director appointments down to Newly Qualified, Paralegal, and legal support roles. Every instruction is handled with the same rigour, regardless of seniority.

Too many recruitment agencies treat hiring as a numbers game — sending volume in the hope that something sticks. Insight operates on a fundamentally different model. We take fewer instructions, work them harder, and only present candidates we genuinely believe are right for the role and the firm.
We invest time in understanding your firm — its culture, its clients, its direction of travel — before we begin any search. That investment means a better result: candidates who contribute from day one and partners who stay.
"We have worked with many legal recruiters over the years. Insight is categorically different — they understand partnership culture and the commercial realities of running a practice."
Managing Partner — Regional Full-Service Firm"Their shortlist for our Employment Partner search was the most targeted and relevant we have received. Every candidate was worth a conversation."
HR Director — Silver Circle FirmFor Partner-level and senior leadership appointments where quality, confidentiality and market coverage are paramount. We conduct an exhaustive, structured search on your behalf.
For associate, solicitor and support-level roles. We work efficiently with no upfront fee — you pay only on successful placement.
For the most senior, confidential, and complex appointments — including founding Partner hires, team moves, and General Counsel searches.
Everything you need to know about working with Insight as a hiring firm.
Both. For Partner-level and senior leadership appointments we strongly recommend a retained search, which allows us to commit the full resource of a structured, exhaustive search. For associate and support-level roles, we typically work on a contingency basis — no fee is payable until a successful placement is made.
Confidentiality is central to how we operate. For sensitive searches — including departing partner replacements or confidential team expansions — we agree a bespoke confidentiality protocol at the outset and operate entirely discreetly throughout. Candidates are never told which firm is instructing us until you are comfortable for them to know.
We operate a strict off-limits policy for all firms we actively work with. Once we have placed a candidate with your firm, we will not approach that individual for a period of two years. We believe this is fundamental to a genuine long-term partnership.
For contingency assignments, we typically present an initial shortlist within 7–10 working days. For retained searches, the timeline depends on the seniority and specificity of the role — most Partner searches are completed within 6–10 weeks from instruction to offer acceptance.
Yes. We offer a sliding-scale rebate on all placements, and a free replacement search if a candidate leaves within three months for reasons related to role or cultural fit. The specifics are set out clearly in our terms of business.
Absolutely. We recruit across the whole of the UK — including major regional centres such as Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh, and Cardiff, as well as smaller regional markets. Our network is genuinely national.

Retained Search means we work exclusively on your instruction, dedicating resource and time to finding the best available candidate — not just the most available. You commit to us; we commit to you.
This model is right for Partner-level appointments, sensitive team moves, and any hire where quality, confidentiality, and thoroughness matter more than speed. We map the market exhaustively before approaching a single candidate — giving you the confidence that the shortlist represents the best the market can offer.
"Insight handled our most sensitive Partner hire with complete discretion. Their understanding of our firm's culture meant they only brought us candidates who were genuinely right — not just technically qualified."
Senior Partner — Top 50 UK Firm"The partner they placed has already exceeded expectations commercially. The process was rigorous, confidential, and — unusually for recruitment — genuinely well managed throughout."
Managing Partner — Regional FirmPartner hiring is one of the most consequential decisions a law firm makes. A single lateral partner can transform a practice area — or create lasting disruption. Insight treats every Partner search with the seriousness it demands.
We understand the commercial dynamics — lock-up periods, profit share structures, client portability — and we guide both parties through a process designed to reach the right conclusion, not just a conclusion.

Contingency recruitment is the most common model for associate, solicitor, and support-level appointments. There is no upfront commitment — we present candidates and you pay a fee only on successful placement.
What makes Insight different in contingency work is the quality of candidates we put forward. We do not operate a high-volume, spray-and-pray approach. Every candidate we present has been spoken to, assessed, and genuinely prepared for the opportunity at your firm.
"We needed a Senior Associate for our Real Estate team quickly. Insight had three strong candidates in front of us within ten days. We made an offer to the first one we saw."

Send a Brief →For the most complex, sensitive, and high-stakes appointments — where discretion and market intelligence are as important as the outcome.
Executive Search is reserved for the most complex and sensitive appointments — General Counsel mandates, founding Partner hires, team moves, and roles where discretion and market intelligence are as important as the outcome itself.
We conduct a structured, exhaustive search on a retained basis. That means a formal brief, a comprehensive market map, direct approaches to passive candidates who would never respond to an advertisement, and a shortlist that is genuinely curated — not simply a list of the available.
"Insight ran our General Counsel search from brief to offer in eleven weeks. The shortlist was tight, well-prepared, and the successful candidate has been transformational for the business."

Begin the Conversation →Whether you are a Partner considering a lateral move, a solicitor ready for the next step, or a newly qualified lawyer navigating your first post-qualification position — Insight offers the honest, expert guidance your career deserves.
We take a fundamentally different approach to candidate relationships. Rather than matching CVs to vacancies, we invest time in understanding your career — where you are, where you want to be, and what the right move actually looks like for you right now.
Many of our best placements come from candidates who were not actively looking. If you are curious about the market — even passively — a confidential conversation with one of our consultants is the best place to start. We will give you an honest assessment of your options without any pressure.
Answers to the questions legal professionals most commonly ask us.
Absolutely. We will never share your details with a potential employer — or anyone else — without your explicit permission. Many of our candidates are in active roles and exploring the market privately. We are used to operating with complete discretion and take that responsibility seriously.
Absolutely. Some of our best placements are candidates who were not actively searching when we first spoke. A conversation costs nothing — and knowing the state of the market, what firms are paying, and what opportunities exist is always valuable. There is no obligation to move, and no pressure from us.
Never. Our fees are paid entirely by the hiring firm. As a candidate, Insight's service is completely free to you — including market advice, interview coaching, offer negotiation support, and all post-placement follow-up.
Yes. We have strong relationships with firms who take NQ recruitment seriously — who look for the right person rather than just the right training seat. We will give you honest advice about where your qualification fits in the market and introduce you to firms that genuinely suit your ambitions.
Yes — practice area transitions are possible at the right stage of a career and with careful positioning. We will advise you honestly on whether a move is realistic given your PQE and background, and if so, how to present your experience most effectively to prospective firms.
It varies significantly depending on seniority and market conditions. NQ and associate-level moves can be completed in a matter of weeks. Partner-level lateral moves typically take between six weeks and three months. We will give you a realistic timeline at the outset and keep you informed throughout.

Register with InsightThe consultant model is transforming how solicitors work. Greater autonomy, higher earnings, and the freedom to build client relationships without the politics. Insight helps experienced lawyers find the right consultancy platform — and helps forward-thinking firms attract the best consultant talent.
A consultant solicitor operates as a self-employed practitioner, typically working under the umbrella of an established law firm's SRA authorisation. You retain a substantial share of the fees you generate — usually 60–75% — while the host firm provides infrastructure, PI insurance, compliance support, and a professional home.
It is a model that suits experienced solicitors with an established client base, those returning from a career break, lawyers seeking a better work-life balance, or anyone ready to be the architect of their own practice.
You work for yourself, set your own hours, choose your own clients, and take home a majority of what you bill.
The host firm's SRA authorisation covers your practice — PI cover, compliance and brand without the overhead.
Instead of a fixed salary, you earn a percentage of fees billed. Most platforms pay consultants 60–75%.
Solicitors with 5+ years PQE and a portable client following who want to maximise earnings and reduce the non-billable burden of firm life.
Lawyers returning after a career break, maternity leave, or a period abroad who want to rebuild their practice without committing to full-time employment.
Those who need true flexibility — carers, portfolio workers, or simply lawyers who want to work from home without sacrificing professional standing.
Solicitors considering a move who want to test a new platform model before committing, or who want to take their practice somewhere more entrepreneurial.
Ambitious lawyers who have been developing a following and are ready to convert that into real ownership of their practice and a far greater share of the upside.
Overseas-qualified or dual-qualified practitioners looking to work in England & Wales through an SRA-regulated platform without setting up their own firm.
Drag the slider to your annual billing target and see your estimated earnings at a typical 70/30 consultant split.

Not all consultancy platforms are equal. Fee splits, referral arrangements, insurance terms, branding rules, admin support, and culture vary enormously. Insight helps you navigate the market and find the platform that genuinely fits your practice.
Splits range from 60% to 85%+. We map which platforms offer the most competitive terms for your billing level and practice area.
Some platforms provide offices, support staff and marketing. Others are entirely remote-first. We match you to the model that suits how you want to work.
We never approach a platform on your behalf without your explicit approval. Every conversation is entirely confidential.
We introduce solicitors to platforms they would never have found themselves — including boutique and specialist firms not prominently marketed.
We identify which consultancy platforms best match your area of practice, client profile, and working style
We negotiate competitive split percentages and terms on your behalf
We advise on the transition from employment to self-employed status and what to expect
Fully confidential — we never approach platforms on your behalf without your explicit approval
We source experienced consultants with established client followings across all practice areas
We work with both national consultancy platforms and traditional firms developing a consultancy offering
Retained and contingency assignments available depending on your requirements
Discreet, professional representation of your platform to the market
It helps significantly, but it is not always essential. Some platforms will take on solicitors without a portable following if they have strong technical credentials and are prepared to work on matters introduced by the platform. However, the consultant model works best — and earns most — for those with an existing client base they can bring with them.
The platform's share (typically 25–40%) covers SRA-regulated practising certificates, professional indemnity insurance, compliance and AML support, practice management software, billing and collections, marketing support, and in many cases office space if required. In effect, it replaces everything a traditional firm would provide — without the salary cap.
Most established platforms offer between 60% and 75% to the consultant. The rate typically depends on your billing volume, the level of support required, and whether you are using office space. High-volume billers often negotiate enhanced terms. Our calculator uses 70% as a representative base case, but Insight can advise on what is achievable for your profile.
Almost all consultancy arrangements are structured as self-employment or through a personal service company. This means you are responsible for your own income tax, National Insurance contributions, and expenses. Most consultants set up as sole traders or through a limited company. We strongly recommend taking independent tax advice before making the move.
This depends on the terms of your consultancy agreement. Some platforms permit multi-platforming (particularly in different practice areas), while others require exclusivity. It is an important point to clarify before signing — and one we can advise on during the placement process.
We work with a range of consultancy platforms including national providers such as Setfords, Excello Law, and others, as well as traditional law firms that have developed their own consultancy models. We are platform-agnostic — our job is to find the right fit for you, not to push any particular provider.
Whether you are at the early thinking stage or ready to make a move, a confidential conversation with Insight costs nothing and may open possibilities you had not considered.
Insight was founded on a simple belief: that legal recruitment could — and should — be done with more honesty, more expertise, and more genuine care for both clients and candidates than the industry typically provides.
The legal recruitment market is saturated with agencies that prioritise placement volume over placement quality. Insight exists because we believed we could do it better — and we have built our reputation on proving it.
We operate across the full spectrum of private practice — serving law firms from Magic Circle institutions to boutique practices. Our consultants have deep, specialist knowledge of the legal market — built over years of working exclusively within it.
We are based in Oxted, Surrey — and we recruit nationally. Our network spans the length of the UK, from Edinburgh to Southampton, from Manchester to Cardiff.
Get in touchWe tell clients and candidates the truth — even when it is not what they want to hear. Honest advice builds trust. Trust builds long-term relationships. Long-term relationships produce better outcomes for everyone.
We only put candidates forward that we genuinely believe are right for a role. We do not fill shortlists for the sake of it. We do not encourage moves that are not in a candidate's best interests.
The legal market is all we do. Our consultants are not generalists who happen to work in legal — they are legal recruitment specialists with deep, current knowledge of every practice area and every firm tier.
Confidentiality is non-negotiable — whether we are conducting a sensitive Partner search or advising a solicitor who is quietly exploring options. Nothing leaves Insight without permission.
Based in Surrey, recruiting nationally. We have active relationships with law firms and legal teams in every major UK legal market.
